Job title: DevOps Cloud Engineer

Managed by: Head of Engineering & Information Management

Responsible for: Developing, administering and supporting Bristol is Opens compute environment.

Hours: 40 hours per week

Purpose of the job

General:

Bristol Is Open (BIO) is a limited company – a joint venture between Bristol City Council and the University Of Bristol with a global reputation. It is an R&D testbed for todays and future, scalable communications and smart city technologies. It’s aim is to:

Specific Role:

The cloud engineer will be responsible for developing, administering and supporting Bristol is Opens compute environment.

The role offers a unique opportunity to develop the Bristol is Opens infrastructure to support the local council by providing technical solutions to issues affecting the city.

This is an opportunity to really help people by solving real world problems in a stimulating and challenging environment.

The infrastructure is a 5G ready environment composed of a range of exciting technologies including OpenStack, KVM VMs, Millimetre wave devices and SDN.

Bristol is Open utilises open source solutions where possible with the view to remain vendor agnostic and open.

You will work with open source technologies including MongoDB, Docker, KVM, Apache, OpenHPC. Bristol is Open is proud to be a member of the Linux foundation and promotes the use of opensource solutions by example.

Key job outcomes/accountabilities

Responsible for ensuring all solutions are feasible, in line with the overall strategy and are deliverable within the timeline and budget of the projects.

Identify and manage risks associated with delivery in conjunction with management.

Day to day responsibilities:

  • Administer the compute environment

  • Proactive monitoring of internal systems

  • Develop and maintain the OpenStack Cloud and Linux servers

  • Evaluate and implement software and hardware solutions

  • Capacity planning and routine software updates

  • Support experimenters with their projects

  • Design and implement technical solutions for projects

  • Manage security of internal systems

  • Produce process documentation to share with colleagues and partners

  • Share solutions and best practice with colleagues and partners

  • Remain up to date with skills and knowledge regarding new and effective technologies and best practice

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have the following skills:

  • 2+ Years of Linux System administration and engineering experience

  • OpenStack provisioning/administration experience

  • Exposure to containerisation technology (Docker, LXC)

  • Understanding of storage technologies preferably Ceph

  • Strong troubleshooting skills

  • Exposure to Git

  • Medium to High level scripting skills (Bash, Python)

  • General Networking skills i.e. TCP/IP Switching

  • Experience in development with scripting languages

  • Practical experience of Software Development Life Cycle, Test Driven

  • Development, Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with partners and customers

  • Ability to design and implement technical solutions to solve real world problems

  • Security first mindset with knowledge of infrastructure/network security (TLS, CA, etc)

  • BSc Degree in computer science or similar

Desirable skills/experience

  • Experience administering/provisioning HPC clusters desirable

  • Firewall administration experience (iptables) desirable

  • Familiarity with Software Defined Networks desirable

  • Knowledge of configuration management tools such as ansible or puppet desirable

  • Familiarity with SELINUX/AppArmor desirable

General Accountabilities

  1.
