Bristol Is Open (BIO) is a limited company – a joint venture between Bristol City Council and the University Of Bristol with a global reputation. It is an R&D testbed for future communications and Smart City technologies. It’s aim is to:

  • contribute to the Smart City ambitions to improve livability, workability for its citizens whilst making it cheaper to run.

Position Summary:

Member of the team responsible for the deployment and management of multitechnology networks. Utilising existing build principles and where enhancements are required providing business justifiable resource allocation requests to management.

Ensure  documentation is maintained and includes practical, relevant examples to promote build re-use.

Ensure that the Network Infrastructure Manager and  Head of Engineering are aware of issues that will impact timely project completion, and pro-actively seek to identify and communicate any schedule risks.

Specific Role

  • Required to install and maintain network capabilities around Wi-Fi access, wireless transport links (microwave, millimetre wave), RF mesh, LTE mobile network (radio base stations and virtualized Evolved Packet Core), and other experimental 5G technologies (LTE Advanced, M-MIMO).

  • Able to use network expertise to optimise the use of devices across our multi-platform environment. Scaling design from large installs of low-power sensors, street cabinet wireless technologies, mobile LTE solutions and bursting low-latency traffic

  • Collaborating with OpenStack and Core Network engineers to match wireless functionality with data flows and overall network performance

  • This role is a fully hands-on network engineering position and will benefit the development of all aspects of wireless and mobile network capabilities used for experimental projects in use on the testbed infrastructure

  • Working together to create opportunities to enhance the infrastructure itself as an intelligent network utilising an SDN approach

  • Ensure implementation and operation is of production-grade quality and includes security elements by design

  • Adhere to both configuration and change management control, testing mechanisms and designed for resilience and availability

Service Planning:

Contribute to network development supporting the strategic business plan and overall service delivery plan.

Responsible for ensuring all solutions are feasible, in line with the overall strategy and are deliverable within the timeline and budget of the projects.

Identify and manage risks associated with service delivery in conjunction with management.

Financial responsibilities:

Work within financial limits, report any adverse financial impacts to line manager and agree remedial action.

Personal Development:

The Network Engineer will have examples of their prior implementation work as well as being able to describe the challenges faced in building and supporting operational systems. His/her accomplishments will allow him/her to build the reputation of Bristol Is Open.


Required Experience:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, equivalent engineering discipline or equivalent work experience

  • Relevant work experience (telecoms / networking background) or proven ability to learn new approaches.

  • Proven experience in managing all or some of the following: wireless networks, mobile networks, LTE packet core, LoraWAN

  • Knowledge of CLI-based network device operation

  • Skilled in network administration and roll out

  • Experienced in network programmability: Software Defined Networking (SDN) & Network Function Virtualisation (NFV)



  • Relevant network vendor certifications

  • Relevant EIC, HSE working-at-height certifications

  • Experience using Linux administration

  • Experience integrating end user wireless devices, Raspberry Pis, Smartphones, laptops etc.

  • Experience of working with Internet of Things, Edge Computing

  • An understanding of Low Latency solutions

  • Experience working with version control and source repository software

  • Experience of deployment in Continuous Integration scenarios

  • Some Python / scripting exposure


Experience / Minimum / Requirements:

  • Two (2) years of network deployment experience (Telecoms)

  • Experience contributing to network designs

  • Experience of configuration management
