Bristol Is Open: Principle Engineer – Core Network

This is a new position for a Principal Engineer in Core Network to work on the development of the Bristol Is Open infrastructure and platform for experimentation in BIO’s computing offering. The Bristol Is Open platform, which leverages on an R&D testbed, underpins the aspiration for contiguous ultrafast connectivity, providing the digital infrastructure needed for the economy and helping Bristol to realise its full economic potential. Successful delivery of this plan will be critical to achieving the prime objective: economic growth and job creation for Bristol.

Role

BIO is looking for a bright and committed fixed network engineer to join the BIO Engineering Team to contribute to the projects and experiments running in Bristol. The Principal Engineer will own on all the aspects associated to BIO’s SDN environment: active nodes, L1/L2 switches and SND Controller development along with network architecture for experimentation.

The engineer will work very closely with the peers of Principal Engineers in the team and our strategic partners and customers. The engineer will also participate in the R&D projects where BIO is involved, including European H2020 projects and international customers projects.

Job Requirements: Essential

  • Minimum of 3 years real experience in an enterprise network environment (specialised in fibre based fixed and wireless networks)
  • Proven experience in Linux networking and network management
  • Proven experience in fibre network –design, installation, operation and troubleshooting– with hands-on experience
  • Proven experience in packet network troubleshooting, including packet analysis, MTU, IPv6 etc.
  • Understanding of SDN and NFV principles (OpenDayLight and ETSI NFV, ETSI MANO)
  • Understanding of SDN Controller principles for IoT applications

Candidate Requirements: Desirable

  • Knowledge on Software Defined Networking (SDN) & Network Function Virtualisation (NFV)
  • Proven experience on Wireless LAN/PAN (802.11 and 802.15.4 families)
  • Certified Cisco Network Administrator (CCNA) or equivalent
  • Advanced notions on Cyber / Network Security
  • Some experience of traffic shaping / prioritisation preferred
  • Understanding of ICN / Openflow.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability and desire to learn quickly
  • Ability to work to deadlines while demonstrating a track record for innovation and creativity
